Albany, OR - Seeking Optometrist
Mar 20, 2023

River View Family Eyecare is a woman-owned, established, boutique primary care and vision therapy practice in Albany, Oregon. I am seeking an OD with a passion for binocular vision and the ability to deliver high level care to our patients, many who pay out of pocket as we are vision plan free.
An average day may be 12-14 comprehensive exams or may be a mix of vision therapy evaluations, progress exams, meeting with vision therapists and performing vision therapy sessions. We have expanded our vision therapy care to Eugene, with a satellite office and tons of room for growth.
I’m flexible on number of days worked per week and am willing to negotiate salary – finding a doctor with the needed skills and personality for our practice is the highest priority. Other employee benefits include health insurance, dental, 401k matching, PTO, membership dues and licensure, and a continuing education allowance.    Please email me, Stephanie Emmert, at [email protected] to find out more!

Optometrist needed for Astoria Job Corps facility
Mar 14, 2023

Is your work schedule a little flexible and you would like to have an excuse to go to the Oregon coast once a month?. Or perhaps you live and work near Astoria and need an occasional respite out of your office. Would you be interested in helping aspiring young people to be able to become productive and successful working adults? On a part time basis, I have provided optometry care one or two days a month at the Astoria Job Corps facility. Most of the equipment that is needed for routine care is provided although I usually bring my own hand held equipment. The site has its own exam room, including an autorefractor, although it is all a little dated equipment.

The vast majority of the needed care is primarily refractive, as much of the population does not have glasses, or may not have had an eye examination in several years. There is no contact lens fitting at the facility as the exam and the glasses are provided and paid for by the Job Corps program.

I have typically done 1 day per month (usually on a Friday) but if it works better, I have on sometimes done two days back to back (usually Thursday/Friday) and then perhaps, based on need for care, done clinics every other month. This situation is through an entity that has multiple similar contracts and hires OD’s as independent contractors. My desire is to help to assure that the facility and the students have the needed care as I plan on continuing care through the end of May 2023 and then starting a “new adventure” providing optometry care in rural New York starting in the Summer / Fall.

Please feel free to reach out to me by my email or mobile information and I will help to answer any questions you might have and will help to connect you with the contracting company if you are interested.

Optometrist needed for Prison Population
Mar 7, 2023

Is your work schedule a little flexible and you have an interest in doing something a little different a few days a month within your profession. Ever had the desire to tell your friends that you have done some “prison time”, or better yet that you have spent several days in prison? Maybe you are interested in helping in the process of assuring that those who are currently “doing time” are potentially better equipped for learning other skills that would serve them better in society. I assure you that you will see things that don’t usually pop up in your chair on a daily basis.

I have provided optometry care, on my days off from my practice, a couple days a month in several “Metro Area” prisons over the last 8 or more years as an independent contractor for a company that contracts with OSCI (Oregon State Correctional Institute in Salem), CCCF (Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville) and CRCI (Columbia River Correctional Institute in Portland). Most of the equipment that is needed for routine care is provided although I usually bring my own hand held equipment. Examining space differs from location and some are more well equipped than others, but if you have ever worked in any sort of a mobile situation (including VOSH or any outreach trip) this would be much easier and less rushed.

A good part of the needed care is primarily refractive, as much of the population has either been underserved or negligent in eye / vision care, which probably also played a role in their current situation. There is also a pretty high percentage of patients that are needing diabetic eye care, as lack of physical activities and “carb / caloric high” diets have an unfortunate way of “growing” diabetics. I spend a fair amount of time educating them on their situation and how to assume personal responsibility for improving their situation. Of course you will see “post trauma” / “drug related” / “TBI” and other co-managing care with the onsite medical staff, however you will not likely see recent trauma, as the logistics are such that (with limited presence of an OD on site) they would have already been treated by the time you are next there. Your role would also be to evaluate, diagnose as able, and advise the facility when to refer out for further care offsite, as they are unable to offer ALL the potential needed tech and tests that you might have in a full time practice.

With current changes in DOC (Department of Corrections) policy, there has been a rapid growth in demand for vision examinations at all of the correctional facilities, although priority is always given to “medical” related eye care needs. Given the growth I would think that a provider could expect to spend 8-9 hours per visit and have up to 2-3 clinics per month at any of the three facilities. In theory, 6-9 days per month is possible although they only have clinics on the weekdays (I have typically done Thursdays or Fridays). Of course let me know if you are only interested in certain facilities and we could arrange for someone else for the others.

I am currently planning on continuing care through the end of May 2023 and then starting a “new adventure” providing optometry care in rural New York starting in the Summer / Fall. Please feel free to reach out to me by my email or mobile information and I will help to answer any questions you might have and will help to connect you with the contracting company if you are interested.
